Antimicrobial resistance surveillance data are currently generated through phenotypic characterization, however this strategy do not contribute much on in depth epidemiological investigation. The integration of whole genome sequencing in this conventional approach leveraged the usefulness of data. In establishing global AMR surveillance using WGS, the NIHR Global Health Research Unit (GHRU) on Genomic Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance outlined the steps in embedding this WGS innovation among its partner countries (Colombia, Nigeria, India and Philippines). The journey to embedding WGS capacity was split into 4 phases: Assessment, Assembly, Optimization, and Reassessment.
